As renowned pest control specialists at Bon Accord Pest Control, we comprehend the anxiety and disruption that pests can cause in both residential and commercial spaces. Today, we’d like to delve into a pest species that is not as commonly discussed as the likes of rats or cockroaches, yet has the potential to inflict significant damage if left unchecked: the weevil. Known for their destruction of grains and stored food items, weevils present a genuine concern that needs attention.

Understanding the Weevil

Weevils are a type of beetle belonging to the Curculionoidea superfamily, characterised by their elongated snouts. Despite their minuscule size (ranging from 3mm to 10mm), they are voracious feeders causing havoc in fields and pantries worldwide. There are over 60,000 species of weevils, but the most notorious ones causing household and agricultural disturbances include the rice weevil, granary weevil, and the vine weevil. Their life cycle comprises four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult, with their entire lifespan extending up to eight months.

Identifying Weevil Infestation

The first step in tackling any pest issue is to identify its presence, and with weevils, it’s no different. Weevils, especially the rice and granary weevils, are infamous for infesting stored grain products. If you notice small holes in food packages, it is a clear sign of weevil activity. Another indication is the presence of live weevils, their eggs, or larvae in food items. In outdoor settings, vine weevils leave notched leaf edges, a clear sign of their nocturnal feeding activity.

The Dangers of Weevil Infestation

The primary concern around weevil infestation is food contamination. Weevils, in their life cycle stages, inhabit, consume, and reproduce in food sources, making the infested food unsuitable for consumption. In large-scale agricultural settings, this results in significant economic losses. Moreover, in gardens, vine weevils can devastate plants, as their larvae feed on the roots, causing the plants to wilt and die.

Managing Weevil Infestation

Managing a weevil infestation requires a multi-faceted approach that includes prevention, monitoring, and control measures.

  1. Prevention: The first line of defence against weevils is prevention. Ensure that grains and other pantry items are stored in airtight, hard plastic or glass containers. Regularly cleaning pantry shelves can also help in early detection and prevention of an infestation.
  2. Monitoring: Regular inspection of food items and agricultural fields is critical. This not only helps detect the initial stages of infestation but also assesses the effectiveness of control measures applied.
  3. Control: Once an infestation is confirmed, it’s crucial to dispose of the infested items promptly and thoroughly clean the storage area. In severe cases, or when infestations persist, professional pest control services like ours at Bon Accord Pest Control are invaluable.

Common Weevils That Can Infest Homes in the UK

Grain Weevil (Sitophilus granarius)

The Grain Weevil is a common pest of stored grains and can infest food products like flour, cereals, and pasta.

Rice Weevil (Sitophilus oryzae)

The Rice Weevil infests rice, wheat, oats, and other stored grains, making it a significant concern for households.

Bean Weevil (Acanthoscelides obtectus)

Bean Weevils can infest dried beans and pulses, such as lentils, chickpeas, and kidney beans, potentially damaging stored food supplies.

Flour Beetle (Tribolium spp.)

While not a weevil, Flour Beetles are often grouped together. They infest stored flour, cereal products, and pet food.

Drugstore Beetle (Stegobium paniceum)

Drugstore Beetles are small beetles that can infest various stored food products, including spices, dried fruits, and tobacco.

Biscuit Beetle (Stegobium paniceum)

Similar to the drugstore beetle, Biscuit Beetles can infest stored food items like biscuits, cereal products, and dried fruits.

Pine Weevil (Hylobius abietis)

Pine Weevils can be found in homes near forests or wooded areas. They primarily feed on the bark of trees but may accidentally infest homes during colder months.

Acorn Weevil (Curculio spp.)

Acorn Weevils infest acorns and may enter homes if there are oak trees nearby.

Strawberry Blossom Weevil (Anthonomus rubi)

Strawberry Blossom Weevils primarily infest strawberries but can occasionally find their way into gardens or homes where strawberries are grown.

Rose Weevil (Rhynchites spp.)

Rose Weevils feed on the buds and flowers of roses, and they can infest gardens or indoor potted roses.

While these weevils can be common pests in the UK, it’s important to note that infestations in homes are generally rare. However, if you suspect an infestation, it’s best to contact a professional pest control service for proper identification and treatment.

We thought we had bedbugs but could find no evidence apart from what we thought were bites. I called Bon Accord and Gabriel was there within a couple of hours. He told us we had carpet beetle. Finding the evidence and showing us photos of the skin reaction which was exactly what we had. He advised and returned at a time to suit us to spray which was done thoroughly and efficiently. No sign of the little critters returning. Thank you Gabriel.

Gabriel turned up with an hours notice one evening and immediately identified the issued. He works efficiently and professionally throughout with timely follow-ups to ensure the problem was resolved. Once completed he was kind enough to continue to check in to see that the issue had gone. Having had Rentokil previously that spent two years doing very little this was a complete breathe of fresh air and solved the problem in less than two weeks. We are grateful and would highly recommend his services.
