If you see a rat in your home or business, you should immediately contact Bon Accord. Even if you can only see a single specimen, you should treat every rat sighting as a potential emergency. Our pest control technicians have all the equipment and experience needed to deal with the issue, but the longer you leave it, the more difficult it will be.
We will explain why every rat sighting is a severe issue shortly. But first, here’s what you need to do when you see a rat in your property.
The first thing to do after spotting a rat in your property is to contain it. If you spot a rat during business hours, containing it in the room where you see it might not always be practical. However, if you spot a rat outside of office hours, trap it wherever you see it. Placing a box or similar container over it is probably the easiest way. But if this isn’t feasible, containing it within the room is the next best option.
You can do this by closing all the doors and windows and using towels or other fabrics to block off any other potential escape root. Remember, rats can squeeze through narrow gaps, including those between doors and floors.
It is also vital that you keep any pets out of the room. Rats can become aggressive, and we have known them to attack pets when they feel threatened. You should also keep any small children back for the same reason. They might be curious and want to see the rat, but don’t let them get too close.
Wait For Our Pest Control Experts
When our pest control experts arrive, they will remove the rat and check the area for any signs of a more extensive infestation. We have trained rat-catching dogs capable of sniffing out the source of an infestation in record time.
Note that killing a rat is not as easy as you might think. Trying and failing to kill a rat is not a pleasant experience. Not only this but doing so could hinder our work once we arrive. Resist the temptation to do anything yourself and simply keep the rat contained until our pest control experts arrive on the scene with their trusty canine sidekicks.
Once we have safely removed the rat from your property, our dogs can get to work doing what they do best; following the scent back to its source and making sure there are no more rodents hiding in or around your property.
Why A Rat Sighting Is An Emergency
The good news is that in the majority of rat sightings that we attend, we only find a single specimen rather than an infestation. Try to avoid people as much as possible. They will rarely deliberately expose themselves to humans. If you see a rat running around your property, it is usually because their regular home or hiding place is not currently safe. Predators, flooding, and construction work are just some of the things that can drive a rat from their safe space.
While people often lump mice and rats together, they are very different pests, and we need to deal with them differently. If you spot a mouse in your property, you should still contact us. But the mice can only do so much damage before our technicians arrive. Rats are very different beasts. They are bigger, stronger, smarter, and considerably less fearful.
Rats have strong, sharp teeth they can use to bite through most common household materials. It isn’t just wires and drywall that rats will gnaw through. They can even make their way through resilient materials like concrete. When they do chew through electrical wires, the result can be more than just losing power, phone, or internet access. Rats chewing through electrical cables are the cause of around 25% of all electrical fires in the UK.
“When most people picture rats gnawing through the walls and floor of a property, they imagine it being like the Shawshank Redemption, with the rodents slowly making their way through materials bit by bit. However, we personally know of at least one case where a client had locked a rat in a room while they wait for pest control experts to arrive. In the hour or so between them shutting the rat in and the pest control experts arriving, the rat managed to chew through the carpet and the floor to make good its escape.
Rats can also be fearless. While they generally try to avoid people, if they are cornered and feel threatened, they will attack just about anything. If you have small children or pets in your home, you don’t want to leave a rat problem any longer than you need to.
Even if you can only see one rat, you don’t want to risk an infestation spiralling out of control. As well as the immediate problems that rats can cause to people, pets, and property, there are longer-term issues to worry about. Rats are major vectors for several deadly diseases and are magnets for germs and other pathogens. They generally live in drains, sewers, and other unhygienic environments where they come into contact with all kinds of nasty substances. Once a rat enters your home or business, they bring all of these substances in with them.
