How to bandage a rat
So How to bandage a rat?
One of the most challenging parts of owning a rat as a pet is preventing them from picking at wounds following surgery should they ever require it. You can fit your rat with a special collar to prevent them from biting dressings, but not every rat, or every owner, likes the idea of using these collars. A better alternative in many cases is to apply a bandage so that your rat will find it difficult to slip out of it or destroy it.
If you don’t want to put a collar on our rat, the best way of preventing them from destroying the fabric is to use lots of it. Trying to stop your rat from chewing on their bandages and shredding them is virtually impossible without a collar. But if you use plenty of fabric, your rat won’t be able to get through the bandage to the wound beneath before you have a chance to change the dressing.
Anyone who owns a pet rat knows that they are far more intelligent than most people give them credit for. If they see you slipping the bandage on like putting on a sock, they will know how to get it off as soon as your back is turned. Similarly, you need to make sure it isn’t too loose, or they’ll slip it off without any trouble. Of course, if you make it too tight, that will cause a whole other set of problems. Most vets recommend applying it in a figure of 8 to make it more difficult for the rat to get out of.
Many people find that adding bandaging or surgical tape to the dressing helps to keep it secure and prevents it from coming loose as the rat moves around. Not only this, but the tape is difficult to chew through, even for a rat.
