How do I identify different kinds of cockroaches?

So How do I identify different kinds of cockroaches?

There are about 4,000 kinds of cockroaches in the world, and only about 30 of them are found in the UK. Of these 30, only three species are common in the UK. These are the German cockroach, American cockroach and Oriental Cockroach.

It is important to be able to identify these species because the treatment you will need or your pest control company might vary depending on which one it is.

There are many ways that an experienced pest controller can tell what kind of cockroach has infested your home, even though they cannot see them. If they know what to look for, they can identify which kind of cockroach it is just by looking at your property.

Pest controllers can tell what kind of cockroaches are in your house based on the location, the type of droppings you find, whether they see egg cases or not and other clues that might be found around your home.

German Cockroaches Identification

German cockroaches are tan or light brown in colour and have two dark brown stripes running from their head to the base of their wings. They also have a dark strip going down the centre of their back. Adults grow up to around 10-12mm (0.4in) in length.

The German cockroach is the most common pest found in homes, restaurants and other establishments throughout the UK. This species of cockroaches thrives in warm temperatures around 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius), which is why they are usually found living in kitchens or near hot water pipes. They are also very good at hiding, so you might often forget that they’re there.

The female German cockroach carries an egg capsule (the ootheca) for around a month and a half, and approximately every three weeks she will drop it and make another one. Young cockroaches take around 200 days to grow from an egg to adult. Since the adult lives only about six months, this means there is usually a life cycle of four generations per year. This roach can reproduce very quickly!

American Cockroaches Identification

American cockroaches are reddish-brown in colour and become darker just before the nymph stage after shedding their skin. They have wings but tend not to fly much so you will find them on floorsand around corners more often than ceilings.

American cockroaches make a high-pitched whining sound when they are frightened or in pain. They can also run very fast and will try to get out of an area if it becomes too dry, hot, cold or there is too much light.

Oriental Cockroach Identification

Oriental cockroaches are shiny black in colour with short wings that cover their abdomens and long antennae that stick out from their heads. They have relatively flat bodies which allow them to fit into narrow gaps where other species cannot go so easily, giving them the perfect living environment inside your home if you have lots of cracks and crevices! This makes this particular pest species harder to get rid of, since you need to make sure every crack has been thoroughly treated.

Cockroach Information Tips and Advice

American cockroaches are much larger than German ones and have a dark brown or black colouring, whereas the German variety is usually light tan in colour with two light stripes down their back.

American cockroaches are also able to fly, which makes them easy to spot if one flies toward you!

Oriental cockroaches look very similar to German roaches, but they’re shiny blackand more flat than other types of roach. They can be slightly smaller than an American roach or slightly bigger than a German one, with short wings that cover their abdomens and longer antennae.

***Knowing which species you have in or around your home can help you decide how to get rid of them to make sure they don’t come back.***
